What Women Should Know About Their Preventive Health Rights Under the ACA

The Future of Women's Preventive Services Congressional Briefing

Today, Dr. Heidi Nelson of Oregon Health & Science University spoke with Melanie Young on  Fearless Fabulous You, an iHeart radio show on that features dynamic women with inspiring stories about health and wellness, about the women’s preventive services that many women may not realize are available at no out-of-pocket cost to them under their current insurance plan.

Dr. Heidi Nelson is the collaborating principal investigator for the HRSA-sponsored Women’s Preventive Services Initiative (WPSI), a coalition of health professionals and consumer and patient advocates with expertise in women’s health across the lifespan to develop, review and update recommendations for women’s preventive healthcare services.

In her interview, Dr. Nelson explains that the WPSI team used evidence-based, scientific review to establish the nine preventive services which are shown to provide the most benefit and value to women’s health and lives. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, all insurance plans are mandated to cover these services that are proven to improve women’s health across their lifespan. Because of this, almost all insurance plans cover these preventive services, meaning women can access birth control, HIV screening, STI screening, cervical cancer screenings, mammograms and more at no extra cost.
